Assignment 19A: Idea Napkin No. 2

1. You: My name is Madison Berardo. I am a third year advertising major at the University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications. I also am working for a concentration in business, too. I have a marketing internship lined up for this summer. Previously, I have completed three other marketing internships as well. I am a very passionate person about the things that I like and the things that I do. I stick to my word, and I usually finish everything I start. This business would play an extremely large part in my life. I would live at Stratton Mountain while opening this business, and even after it opens. I would love living there, especially in the Winter when I would be able to snowboard everyday. I hope that this business does so well, and I could expand it to other mountains. My dream would to do this full time, because it would not feel like a burden for me.

2. What are you offering to customers?: Essentially, I am offering a pet kennel at ski resorts for those who travel with their pets. We would offer boarding for animals during the hours that the ski resort is open. Water, food, play time and belly rubs are all included in the price. We also would offer home visits for those who have pets, live on the mountain, and would rather them stay in the comfort of their home.

3.Who are you offering it to? I am offering this service to those who travel to ski resorts with their pets. These people can be home owners on the mountain, visitors, or locals; pretty much anyone who is an avid skier or snowboarder who travels with their pets.

4.Why do they care?: People treat their pets like they are human, and oftentimes they are part of the family. Many people enjoy bringing their pets with them everywhere they go. At ski resorts, it can get a little stressful because skiing is a long day. Many people worry about their dogs, and stop a few times throughout the day to make sure they are okay. This service would take away all of the patients' worries.

5.What are your core competencies? I have never seen a service like this one. I have been to many ski resorts across the country and world and I have never seen a service like this one. Also, play time and belly rubs are not normally included in the price of a pet kennel, but they would be at Snow Paws.

I think that all of these things go hand-in-hand with each other. It is important to be passionate about something because if you are not passionate than the same drive is not there. I think the biggest challenge would be that it is my first ever time opening a business. I think that the idea is there and I have the mentality to be able to do it, but opening a business is extremely difficult. My target market is specific, but ski resorts tend to be huge. I do not believe that certain parts are weaker than others.

My feedback was very positive and most people really liked the idea. One person mentioned that not everyone travels with their pets. I made sure to clearly say this time that my target market is those who travel to ski resorts with pets. Other than that, the other feedback was really encouraging.

  3. Hey Madison, you definitely seem like someone who is well prepared to enter this industry due to your extensive hands-on experience in marketing. I think the key to this assignment was to take feedback and find ways to implement it in your new idea napkin. I think you did a good job of this by taking the feedback regarding your target market. When explaining your idea in simple terms you want to be able to say as much as possible as quickly as possible, and ensuring your audience understands your target market will be key to achieving this.

  4. Once this business takes off, you may be able to expand out with a complimentary product/service: caring for young children while parents are slopes. You could get the recommendation from the resort as the go-to person as a trusted source. Only on occasion would it be needed, or maybe every day just while the parents ski. I know once when my daughter was very tiny, I went with family to Disney and we stayed at a resort for a week. My mom was with us, didn’t care a thing about visiting the parks, so she babysat while we went. Just food for thought.
Marketing in your background is huge!
